Will Hillary Clinton be our next Secretary of State
During the primary season of Election 2008, I was a strong John Edwards supporter. I am not a long-term, hard core politico and have never supported another candidate to the extent that I supported John Edwards and his wonderful wife, Elizabeth. Due to the geographic location, I was able to attend many of their events and get a feel for them as a person. So, I was ‘committed’ and didn’t think anyone else could possible become president in 2008.
In Columbia, SC in April, 2007, I was fortunate enough to be able to see all seven candidates together. That was the weekend of the Orangeburg Debate. While I was able to see all of them and hear them each speak briefly, I was able to hear a full speech by Joe Biden and Bill Richardson as well as John Edwards, I was totally amazed at the chrisma of Joe Biden. I had always liked him but wasn’t prepared to be as impressed as I was by this man. I wish I had been able to hear a speech by Clinton and Obama too, but I wasn’t.
When John Edwards unexpectedly announced the suspension of his campaign, most of us were in deep shock. I will have to admit it took the energy out of my political life from that point through the remainder of the campaign. I just sat on the side lines and watched with the exception of a few feeble attempts to work on behalf of some downstream candidates. However, over the course of the election I waffled between supporting Hillary Clinton and supporting Joe Biden. Joe finally won my heart as he is very much aligned with my views and I was somewhat afraid Hillary would be too divisive. Well, Biden measured up to my every expectation, but boy was I wrong about Clinton. She is anything but Divisive. She is absolutely polished and knows exactly what it takes to play in the big leagues. She is wonderful.
Now, the reason that I didn’t see Obama as my second choice was that I was very resentful of some things that many of his supporters had done throughout the election to those of us who supported the other candidates. So, I had written their candidate off as my number two choice. However, once he received the nomination, he ‘grew’ on me and I am now a very enthuastic supporter of Obama. His choice of VP pulled me totally into his camp as it would if he had chosen Clinton too.
Now, after saying all that, I am hearing that Obama may again use his good judgment and ask Clinton to become Secretary of State. If and when he does, I trust she will use her good judgment and tell him ‘Yes’. Wow! This is better than Christmas!
I had hoped prior to acknowledgment of John Edwards of his indiscretion, that he would be Attorney General. However, I realize that is far too much to ask or expect at this point. I do, however, hope that he picks someone along the lines of Andrew Cuomo for Attorney General. Andrew has to be the best look at the good ’stock’ he came from with a dad like Mario.
Way to go Obama! Way to go.
